Psychotherapy

When and what for?

The innate flexibility of every person enabling them to transform painful patterns into healthy ones in learning processes is in the heart of cognitive behavioral therapy. Psychotherapy can help in case this flexibility has been weakened or partially lost in the course of your life. For example, if you are burdened and can no longer keep your suffering in a managable level by applying your usual coping strategies or if you have the feeling that you are 'trapped' in a pattern that is unfavorable for you and your environment and that as a result, unpleasant experiences repeat themselves over and over. Offering professional psychotherapeutic support, I would like to show you tools that can restore this flexibility. In this process, distress and emotional strain give way step by step to healthy perspectives and new optimism. Here I set a particularly high value on your own strengths and forces, which often seem buried in times of distress and just wait to be unveiled. I support you in regenerating and strengthening your individual resources, enabling you to gain self-worth and experience relief as well as a sense of control and self-expertise for a healthier, more fulfilling and relaxed life in harmony with your values and long-term goals.

The therapeutic process - reaching the goal together

Each therapy process is as individual as the people participating in it. After we have specified your therapy goals, we turn to the triggering and sustaining conditions of your difficulties in the present. If necessary, we look back into your biography in order to promote a deeper understanding of problematic patterns and thus develop sustainable solutions. In order to help you to achieve the desired change, I accompany you in the implementation of the individual steps we agree upon, both in the safe therapeutic space and in your everyday routine. These can be, for example:

  • Trying out unfamiliar behaviors and thereby gaining completely new experiences
  • Exploring and questioning basic attitudes and beliefs in order to change the ones blocking you
  • Working out a beneficial approach to deal with emotional expression
  • Crystallizing central needs, desires and life motives in order to gain a necessary new sense of significance in your life

Complemented by acquiring and practicing strategies for effective long-term self-care, psychotherapy paves the way to sustainable relief, ease and serenity that improve your quality of life. Your therapy goals lead us throughout this process and at the same time serve as a 'barometer' for therapy progress.

From one human to another

First and foremost, psychotherapy is an encounter between two people. Above all else, it is essential to me to show you empathy and appreciation from the very first contact, as well as to take the time to explore your problem in detail with you. I focus on your individual history and personality and not your diagnosis.

Specialization in Trauma

Therapy & EMDR

Thanks to a multi-annual advanced training certified by the DeGPT (German-speaking Society for Psychotraumatherapy) with integrated treatment of various trauma-related disorders such as PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), complex PTSD and secondary depression, burn-out, alcohol and drug addictions as well as anxiety and eating disorders, I have plenty of theoretical and practical experience in this domain. In order to help you overcome traumatic events and gain more security and control over your own life, my repertoire of methods includes, for example EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), IRRT (Imagery Rescripting & Reprocessing Therapy), brainspotting, screen technology and other hypnotherapeutic methods.

What characterizes a post-traumatic stress disorder?

A post-traumatic stress disorder can develop following the experience of an extreme incident such as accidents, catastrophes or an extraordinary threat, e.g. due to violence. In the event of insufficient processing of what has happened, the consequences of the protective mechanisms operating during the traumatic event (e.g. mentally "splitting off" from reality in order to reduce the intensity of the experience) can over time lead to various symptoms that impair the quality of life of those affected and cause recurring suffering. The following symptoms may appear days, weeks, months, or even years after the event:

Reliving

Unwanted imposing of memories or impressions of the trauma (also in the form of nightmares), which leads to emotional flooding and helplessness

Hyperarousal

The experience of extreme vigilance, restlessness and nervousness as if the danger had not passed.

Avoidance

In order to reduce the degree of exposure to triggers as much as possible, any circumstances that could remind of the event are being avoided. For the purpose of evading reliving the event, dissociation (a reduced or altered state of consciousness) may occur. Avoidance is usually helpful in the short term, yet in the long term prevents the processing of what has happened, which massively restricts the scope of action of those affected and is necessary for healing.

More complaints

The type and duration of an extreme stress experienced as well as one's own stress processing style can lead to different complaints. For example, in the case of a complex post-traumatic stress disorder after several or continuous extreme stresses, strong feelings of guilt and shame as well as physical impairments are often added. Depression, anxiety disorders and substance addictions can also be the result of unprocessed extreme stress.

Time plays a role in acute trauma - short term appointments available in this case

In order to counteract the possible development of serious illness and chronification, professional help is recommended as soon as possible after experiencing acute extreme stress with subsequent recurring symptoms from the abovementioned list. With adequate treatment, the prognosis is more favorable, so that the natural stress reaction often subsides within a few weeks and does not turn into full-scale PTSD. In case you suspect you are affected, you are welcome to contact me and depending on the urgency, receive a short-term appointment ( usually within a few days ) in the sense of first aid for stabilization, trauma-specific anamnesis and clarification about the necessity and possibilities of trauma-centered psychotherapy.

Tip: under certain conditions, the costs for the initial consultation will be paid by the Weißer Ring. You can get more Further information on the financial modalities can be found here.

EMDR

The EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a method recognized by the German Scientific Advisory Board for Psychotherapy as an effective therapy for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) since 2006. It is nowadays applied in a broader sense (e.g. for grief, chronic pain). The effectiveness of this procedure as well as the relatively quickly following relief after its application have inspired me to specialize in it. As a certified EMDR-psychotherapist recognized by the EMDRIA e.V.. I am happy to offer EMDR-treatment for trauma-related conditions, complex grief, chronic pain, certain anxiety disorders and phobias.

How does EMDR work in trauma treatment?

Due to the action of protective instincts during the experience of trauma, severely stressful events are sometimes stored in an unconnected manner in the brain, as if they were an isolated capsule. As a result, access to the memory content associated with the traumatic event is restricted, so that deliberate remembering is hardly possible and certain triggers such as images, sounds or smells that are similar to those of the trauma unleash the same extremely painful impressions from the time of the event. In an EMDR treatment, after adequate stabilization, this capsule is gently opened with the aid of bilateral stimulation (e.g. left-right eye movements), which enables the reassociation and integration of the isolated memory contents and finally the storage as a past event in the brain. Accordingly, these contents lose their typical triggering character, which, prior to therapy has a “here-and-now quality” in favor of a “there-and-then quality” and the symptoms decrease noticeably.

Coaching & Counseling

Clarification & solution in sight

In contrast to psychotherapy, coaching and counseling refers to overcoming specific professional and private challenges and obstacles that require reflection under professional guidance, whose implementation does not require psychotherapy in the sense of an in-depth treatment. You still benefit from the use of proven psychotherapeutic techniques and short interventions, with which we can generate a tailor-made solution for your problem within a short time.

One of the primary goals of this type of individual support is to maintain and increase performance both privately and professionally in the face of particularly demanding conditions. As a psychoprophylaxis, it is also suitable for preparing for expected mental stress as well as for preventing mental illness.

I would be happy to assist you in optimizing your potential for competent and satisfactory management of current conflicts and problems. In this process I encourage you to develop your own creative solutions, providing you the necessary insight in order to identify new and concrete alternatives that serve your needs.
